Pharmacies - new strategic partners for Rx and digital health
When looking at the cooperation between pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies, many first think of the OTC sector. For most Rx pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies have so far been seen primarily as "drug dispensing points". At the same time, digital health applications (DiGA) have so far hardly included pharmacies in their market strategies.
However, current developments could change this picture. With the introduction and expansion of pharmaceutical services (pDLs), points of contact are emerging that affect the core business of Rx pharmaceutical companies both directly and indirectly.
Mediateeffects arise, for example, from a possible improvement in therapy adherence for polymedication, organ transplants or oral cancer therapies.
Indirecteffects would include expanded vaccination offers in pharmacies. Currently, only flu and Covid-19 vaccinations are permitted. However, according to the recently announced plans of Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU), this offer could be extended to all inactivated vaccines.
There are also new cooperation opportunities for DiGA companies. For example, the German Pharmacists' Conference 2025 has called for the catalog of pharmaceutical services to be expanded to include advice on smoking cessation. Digital services can and should be an integral part of the consultation.
To discuss these developments with you and experts from the field, we have invited two speakers from pharmacy practice to our second Forward Pharma event.
Our guests are Kerstin Bornemann, pharmacist for oncological and palliative pharmacy, and Benedikt Bühler, pharmacist and board member of the Association of Innovative Pharmacies (via).

Pharmaceutical services are important and right because they can increase the safety of drug therapy. Particularly in the field of oral antitumor therapy, patients at home are responsible for medicines with a very narrow therapeutic range. Additional support, ideally from the pharmacy around the corner, promotes adherence and is a great help to patients! Kerstin Bornemann
Pharmacies are consistently developing into healthcare service providers. Pharmaceutical services are at the heart of this, because they finally bring the knowledge acquired during their studies to the healthcare sector for a fee. Pharmacists are thus actively shaping the future of safe and patient-oriented drug therapy. Those who do not follow this path must question their role in healthcare. Dr. pharm. Benedikt Bühler
